Speed Circuit began as singer/ songwriter John Nelson’s (New Grenada, Copper Thieves) pandemic recording project. Like other musicians unable to play music with friends, working on songs alone at home was a positive way to deal with the isolation. Many of the songs recorded during this time were mixed by Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr., Kim Gordon, Speedy Ortiz) at Sonelab in Easthampton, MA. These recordings were released in 2023 as “Mixtape For Silvy” (dedicated to John’s dog).
John’s longtime musical accomplice, Ryan Allen (Extra Arms, Thunderbirds Are Now!), played on some of the mixtape tracks. Always looking for a new outlet, Ryan offered to play drums if live shows were booked. They recruited Brent Mosser, bassist from Detroit bands (Mountain Club, The Word Play) they had shared stages with over the years. The three played a handful of shows and decided the logical move was to work on new music.
During early 2024, the band rehearsed until they had enough songs for a record. A weekend session was booked with Geoff Michael at Big Sky Recording in Ann Arbor, MI. Taking inspiration from trios such as Hüsker Dü, Sebadoh and Nirvana, the songs were captured mostly live with minimal overdubs and just enough production.
Survey The Damage is the collection of songs that transpired that weekend. Vocal hooks, loud guitars, fuzz bass and big drums recall ‘90s indie guitar rock while still sounding current.
